Reverence is a quality of life which takes seriously all that God reveals, commands and inspires. Liturgy is the moment in our lives when reverence is the key to revelation of the divine nature. It was not man who authored the act of sacrifice nor the worship due to the holiness of God. Instead it was God Himself who revealed the act of religion in which the soul is re-bonded to God. There is only one act of re-bonding and there is only one religion revealed by God and to be reverenced by all those who seek eternal life and union with the Holy Trinity.
At our Lord’s baptism and His transfiguration the Trinity reveals the depth of the Love that binds the Father to the Son through the Holy Spirit. The Father overshadows the Son while the Holy Ghost in the form of a dove makes the Love almost tangible. St. John tells us clearly that “God is love and he who abides in love abides in God.” In fact he who believes that Jesus is the eternal Son of the Father possesses the Spirit of God for only in the spirit can one say with St. Peter: “Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.” No mere man could reveal this truth to Peter it had to come from the Father through the Holy Ghost. Reverence affirms the divine reality that God so loved the world that He sent His only begotten Son that whosoever shall believe in Him shall be saved by Him.
In the Holy Trinity there is such a harmony of Love that only those who reverence the plan of God can come to the reality of the Triune God within their heart of hearts. The reverential soul realizes in the silence of his heart that God and the actions of God cannot be touched by every Tom, Dick or Harry. From the beginning God did not allow the people to enter the holy of holies lest they lose their reverence for the Divine Mystery. Consider the example of the first ordination in which Aaron’s sons are about to be ordained. The sacrifice is on the altar; the blood has been shed and the newly ordained are to bring the sacred fire to burn incense in mediating the prayer of the people to the God Who formed them. Numbers tells us that the boys brought a “profane fire” and it resulted in God striking the two dead.
All things are sanctified by blood and a profane fire is one not touched by the blood of the sacrifice. Reverence demands respect for all that God requests. These boys took the easy route thinking that it just did not matter. It did matter. What God has asked of us must be done by us. No request or command of God can be neglected lest we destroy ourselves. Consider for a moment that request of God at Fatima which conforms with the prophecies of Our Lady of Good Success. Has the Pope (any of the Popes from 1917 on) fulfilled the expressed will of God? If it happens all that is wrong will be righted and all that is pagan will become Christian and there will be a peace in this world that man could never achieve outside of Mary’s intervention.
The spirit of reverence to God has separated from the Catholic Conciliar Church for the respect for the Blessed Sacrament has left the Church and now few believe in the real presence. Look at the manner in which the Novus Ordo priest act. Even the visible head refuses to genuflect before the Blessed Sacrament. Pope John Paul II replaced the Blessed Sacrament at Assisi with a bust of Buddha. Time after time we hear of the abuse of the spiritual treasure of the Holy Eucharist. Isn’t it strange that the Devil believes and wants to acquire a host in order to perform his black mass. The devils believe but the modern Catholic has handled the holiest of gifts and now treats it as a piece of bread.
Reverence for the mystery of the Holy Trinity alone can cause a return to the reverence for the Blessed Sacrament which in turn will lead the believer to reverence all those created by the most Holy Trinity. This reverence is the love which is at the heart of the two great commandments. The perfect adorer throughout history remains the Blessed Mother who alone can transform this world through the crushing of Satan’s skulls. She will be the one to turn to and to imitate. She alone knows the awesome greatness of the Trinity and she alone perfectly complied with all God’s desires. Never fail to develop that reverential fear that puts all things divine in the number position in our lives.
Resist the error of thinking “I just have to be good to attain the kingdom of God.” This heresy is abundant in the world around us and the error is clear. The soul must seek to do good in order to be united to our goal: Jesus Christ. All goodness which does not achieve that goal is worthless. Let us love the most Holy Trinity and affirm all that we have been taught through revelation and the true magisterium of the Church.
In the hearts of Jesus, Mary and Joseph,
Fr. Voigt
