20th Sunday After Pentecost 2018

In God a Word is a Person, while in man a word is the expression of a thought. In the plan of God the divine Logos descends from heaven to recreate the love bond with all men and women. In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God. When God speaks a word (dabar in Hebrew), the word takes place (e.g. Let there be light…). So we must understand that the power of the Word of God, Jesus Christ, commands the world and all parts of the world which include your life and mine. That Word interprets, exposes and heals any and all who would come to Him. So now consider what is taking place in this brief story of Jesus returning to Cana of Galilee where He had transformed water into wine and His disciples believed in Him.

News spreads rapidly in these areas and the ruler received word that Jesus of Nazareth had returned. The ruler’s dear son, only a child, had a dangerous fever that was bringing him close to death. What father would not go to any length to save his son? The ruler thought that his best chance to save his son was to bring Jesus down to heal the boy. His faith was weak but his love for his son was strong and Jesus was his only hope. Now comes the moment of interpretation: “Unless you see signs and wonders, you do not believe.”

It seemed to be a challenge and the ruler rose to it and insisted that Jesus “come down”. The exposition becomes clear now that Jesus responds: “Your son lives.” The Divine Word of God Who had come down from His Father has spoken a divine Logos and it shall be. It took place at the Seventh Hour (the hour of perfection). The ruler now acts with a deeper faith and returns home without Jesus but with His Word. On that journey his servants find him and with joy tell him that “his son lives”. His only question was one of the time. It was the seventh hour that Jesus had said: “Your son lives.” Now faith comes to its perfection for the ruler believed and with him his whole household.

First let us consider how the word interprets the world and all that is within it. The Word of God creates and heals every situation that we can bring to it. Apart from that Word the World becomes sick to death. Confusion would reign because the words of man cannot produce a power that can create, interpret or heal our problems. Only the Divine Word of God has that power and authority. Consider how the words of demonized senators confused the very issue of a judicial confirmation. As we all watched the farce develop we knew that their words were deceiving even if under oath. They were not of God but the words of a devil.

In our society the culture of death is crying for more victims and to protect murderers from the sin of murdering babies. The Word of God condemns and will correct us with the consequence. Those who live by murder seal their own fate for no one’s life is protected when a baby in innocence is slaughtered. Make no mistake about this: words do tell us what is in the heart of the person speaking. As Judge Jeanine Pirro correctly called them “demon-rats”; their goal was to carry on the dirty work of legalized murder. Those who understood this must recognize in the Gospel story of the dying boy; that boy is the soul of our society. Unless we come back to the Divine Logos and see all life as a precious gift from a Father’s Love the son (soul of society) will die.

Let us return to the Word of God. His Fifth Commandment says clearly: “Thou shalt not kill.” Jesus our Lord has come to call us back to Life. He has shed His Blood in testimony that the Father’s Love is complete and perfect. With the purchase price established with the soul and paid by the innocent Son, now we can come to Him and believe in the Word that interprets our life, heals our sins and breathes in us eternal love and life. What a great privilege is ours through the mediation of our mother, Mary, whose humble acceptance of the Father’s will brought us a most precious Redeemer. Let us pray for the “demon-rats” and all others who do not know the Divine Logos and need to come to Him for their salvation. May God have mercy on them.

In the hearts of Jesus, Mary and Joseph,

Fr. Voigt
